TENNIS ace Colin Fleming has taken 2012 by storm with impressive performances at last weekend’s Davis Cup tie and the Australian Open.

Colin (27) from Linlithgow and his Brit doubles partner Ross Hutchins stole the show at Glasgow’s Braehead arena last Saturday defeating Slovakia in the Europe/Africa Group One first-round tie in the Davis Cup with a win over Michal Mertinak and Filip Polasek 6-3 7-6 0-6 6-3. They have now set up a second round clash with Belgium for April.

Speaking to the Journal and Gazette this week, he said: “It’s been a good start to the year. We played really well, but we need to work hard to maintain that level of play. The Slovak game was a really special tie to win. Andy Murray wasn’t playing so we were the underdogs.”

Their success follows an impressive run at the Australian Open where for the first time in a Grand Slam event they got to the third round, and stole a set off top American seeds Bob and Mike Bryan before going out 6-4 0-6 6-2.

Colin added: “We won two good matches at the Australian Open before we lost to the Bryans, and we’ve done well off the back of that. That’s the best we’ve ever done in Australia and our last three Grand Slams have been good - so we are making progress. “A career goal of mine would be to win one of the doubles titles in a Grand Slam one day.”

But the pressure is on and Colin heads off this weekend with Ross to play tournaments in Memphis and Florida. Currently ranked at no.26 in men’s doubles, one of Colin’s main aims this year is to qualify for the London Olympics. And if that wasn’t enough he also wants, as part of the British Davis Cup team, to break into the World Group where he can spar with the very best in international tennis.
