Linlithgow try out

LINLITHGOW Rugby Club's second and third XV squads had a trial run against Kinross last weekend.

While the visitors turned up with just 15 players, Linlithgow on the other hand had almost 30 and all of them got on the field in one of the agreed four 20-minute quarters.

The first quarter proved that the older, more experienced Kinross side could easily cope with the young, faster local lads and they thwarted the Linlithgow pack in the loose and in the line-out although the Reds held them well in the scrum.

Kinross's weakness quite quickly was seen to be the lack of any attack in the backs, but their defence was good enough to hold the Reds at bay until scrum-half Chris Bredin snapped up a loose ball and touched down from 20 yards out, Andy Blundell converting.

Kinross started well with their left winger touching down in the corner within the first five minutes of the second quarter after a good break by the centre. In the best try of the day young fullback Lewis Barnes touched down after the Red backs took the ball from the centre of the park setting up the try in the corner.

The third quarter was nothing to write home about with a lot of possession resulting in no breaks in the visitors defence.

The last quarter was a real tester for the older men from Kinross.

Having played against a never-ending stream of fresh legs it was little wonder that they let in three tries by Dawes, Bredin and Blundell.

As a trial Kinross took much more out of this encounter as their depleted squad had a great work-out before their league season whereas the worth of fielding near 30 players against 15 was puzzling.

Linlithgow pool: Archer, Gordon, Clydesdale, Robb, Brown, Wood, Black, McKenzie, Stewart, Forrest, Lockhart, Laing, Herdman, McLean, Hewitt, Blair, Gardner, Bredin, Dawes, Goudie, Blundell, Murray, MacKenzie, Barnes, Blythe, Simm, Davies, Martin.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the first XV start their 2010/11 league campaign in Ellon. Ellon finished third last year, just ahead of Linlithgow so it will be a good test for the new squad.

The 2nd XV are still looking for a fixture while the 3rds are away at Inverleith.
