Over £6000 in 24 hours for fundraiser after sudden death of M&S Falkirk 'legend'

John McAleer, who was known as the welcoming face at the entrance of the M&S Foodhall in Central Retail Park, took ill last Wednesday and died a short time later.

Wife Lesley, 14-year-old son Adam, friends, shoppers and colleagues have been left shocked by the 53-year-old’s death.

A JustGiving account started by Lauren Brown, owner of Falkirk business Sisters Boutique, to help John’s relatives has broken through the £6300 mark in just one day.

A statement on the page reads: “Falkirk Bairns have been outpouring in their grief and gratitude following the utterly devastating news regarding John McAleer, aka Mr Falkirk, M&S John, who has sadly passed away.

“A nicer guy you couldn’t meet and a Falkirk legend that worked in Sleeves Records in Cow Wynd then the M&S store in the High Street and latterly the retail park.”

It adds: “We couldn’t let John’s passing go without a tribute to the wonderful customer service he has given to the Falkirk Bairns for all these years.”

M&S has set up a book of condolences so members of the public can pay their respects.

Brian Torley, M&S Falkirk store manager, said: “John was a one-off employee and, in everyone’s eyes, the face of M&S Falkirk.

“Smiling, cheery and welcoming, he knew every customer by name and they knew John. We are heartbroken at the store and we know John is irreplaceable as a friend and colleague.

“John was truly a store legend.”
