Transition Linlithgow million pound plan

A MILLION pound action plan for sustainable travel around Linlithgow has been unveiled by local environmentalists Transition Linlithgow (TL).

After a recent stakeholder meeting, TL commissioned JMP Consultants to devise a comprehensive plan for the town after surveying High Street and Leisure Centre users and auditing local facilities. The report found that there were good quality conditions for promoting sustainable travel across much of the town, but they identified extra measures that could be taken on board.

Top priority recommendations included Personal Travel Planning, a primary school behavioural change programme, school travel plans, creation of Linlithgow West pedestrian/cycle link, public transport promotion and a Linlithgow town map. Costings included £130,000 per year for increasing the service L1 to every 15 mins, £370,000 for surface improvements to existing paths, £270,000 for High Street improvements, £260,000 for improved access to canal towpath, and £230,000 for Blackness Road enhancements.

Alan Brown, project co-ordinator at Transition Linlithgow, said: “TL will seek funding to try and help deliver a few of these recommendations but clearly some items cost a lot of money and need to be planned over many years to come. I’m sure this is all possible with a little imagination and enthusiasm to work together to deliver.”

For now TL will concentrate on the Mains Burn Bridge, pilot Personal Travel Planning, some primary school travel plans, the town map and promotion of the existing L1 bus service with help from partner organisations. The action plan can be viewed at Linlithgow library, the TL offices on Court Square and online at www.transitionlinlithgow.org.uk
