New bridge works take shape

WORKS involved on the building of the new Forth Crossing are beginning to take shape in and around Queensferry.
Locals cannot help but notice the amount of activity in the countryside surrounding the town, namely at the western and southern edges of the town.
Work has also begun on creating the contact and education centre at the Forth Road Bridge car park with the building’s outer framework already erected. Once constructed, it will act as a central point for public information during the bridge building process and will also be home to Traffic Scotland’s national control centre which monitors Scotland’s trunk road network.
There is preparatory work being undertaken in fields at Echline, where the new bridge will touch land, and in fields alongside the town’s Builyeon Road, the proposed route of the new carriageway which will link with the existing A90/M9 spur.
In the Forth at Beamer Rock, excavation work is underway to create the foundations for the new bridge’s central tower.
And in neighbouring Kirkliston, work is also underway at Junction 1a to create slip-roads which will eventually link traffic from the new bridge to and from the M9 without the need to travel to Newbridge. A works compound has also been created on the outskirts of the village, on the B9080, to accommodate staff and plant.
Later this month, the M9 spur will be closed overnight on three consecutive Saturdays to allow the installation of three overhead gantries.
David Climie, project director with Transport Scotland, said: “Across the project we are looking to minimise disruption to the public and local communities wherever possible.
Keeping people informed and engaged is an important part of our work and a wide-ranging programme of initiatives has been put in place to provide updates on the work.”
Over the five years it will take to build the new bridge Transport Scotland propose to deliver regular information sheets to homes within the affected areas. Their most recent update is scheduled to be delivered to homes this week.
