Ferry's top two unveiled

THERE may be two months to go before the Ferry Fair but South Queensferry is already excited.

The Fair Queen-elect has been announced as Evie Dransfield and the Gracious Lady who will crown her on August 15 will be Irene McGill.

Evie (11) is in primary six at Queensferry Primary and she was more surprised than anyone to be chosen as Fair Queen.

She said: "At first I was a bit shocked – my friends told me I didn't even smile when I found out! But it's sunk in now and I am so excited."

Evie who lives on New Halls Road in the Ferry can't choose which part of the day she is most excited about. I think I'm most looking forward to the crowning, but there will be lots of things on the actual day itself."

Evie will be fulfilling a life-long dream and following in the footsteps of her mum Lisa who was Gala Queen at a fair in her home town of Nottingham.

Mum Lisa, dad Matt, and Evie's younger brother Oliver (8), who is an escort, will be helping to decorate the house for the big day.

Gracious Lady Irene McGill may have been born in Leith but she considers herself a local as she has lived in the burgh for the last 46 years.

Irene (77) who lives on Burgess Road used to visit the Ferry every weekend when she was a child and she loved the place.

She said: "I was always coming down here to visit relations in Queensferry and in the end I married a Queensferry man – Jimmy in 1957."

Sadly widowed in 1967, mum-of-five Irene kept herself busy by becoming immersed in the town.

Irene said: "I used to help out in the youth clubs in the town and the disco for the young people that used to be on Fridays. A lot of people used to come and the kids loved it."

Irene, a former British Legion president, said: "I didn't expect to be asked – it is a great honour to be chosen. I just hope we have a good day this year."

Irene now has 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
