Day and Knight at Linlithgow Palace jousting tournament
KNIGHTS in armour will be mounting their steeds and reaching for their lances for a spectacular summer jousting day at Linlithgow Palace.
The medieval clash takes place on the weekend of July 11 and 12, against one of Scotland's most beautiful historic backdrops. As the knights charge into the fray they will be accompanied by a dramatic soundtrack.
Linlithgow Palace was a favourite residence of the Stewart kings and queens, with the lands around it and the loch their playground.
But you don't have to be royalty to enjoy this summer's display of skill and daring.
Nick Finnigan, Historic Scotland events and filming manager, said: "Linlithgow Palace used to be the preserve of the royal family and their special guests.
"But this spectacular show is open for everyone to enjoy, and will offer lots of entertainment for all the family."
The afternoon will be packed with excitement from the first fanfare, which announces the knights' arrival in the arena, to the crunch moment when the tournament champion is decided. In addition to the jousting there will be combat displays, archery, falconry and a living history encampment.
Visitors can also enjoy the palace itself, where there will be costumed performers taking on the roles of rival medieval lords. The event takes place from 12.30 to 4.30pm both days and is part of Historic Scotland's nationwide programme in support of the 2009 Year of Homecoming.
Park and Ride is available, tickets available at the event, or it is free to Historic Scotland members.
