Charger warning after Bo'ness house fire

A PHONE charger left plugged in a socket was the cause of a terrifying fire in a Lothian Crescent house on Monday night.

Heroic dad, Graeme Aitken (36) pushed his family out of their ground-floor flat after he saw his bedroom engulfed in flames and smoke around 10pm.

And this week the Bo'ness couple urged other families not to leave anything plugged in for long, to avoid a similar near tragedy.

Mr Aitken and his partner Carolanne Wilson (34), with their daughters Samantha (14) and Caitlin (12), who are both at Bo'ness Academy, had been watching a family film in the living room when they first noticed a smell.

Mr Aitken checked the electric blanket in their bedroom and looked in the girls' bedroom but found nothing out of the ordinary.

But unknown to him a mobile phone charger plugged in behind a set of drawers was smouldering. Around 10pm smoke alarms sounded and Mr Aitken and Ms Wilson ran to their room to find it on fire.

For the full story, see this week's Bo'ness Journal, on sale Friday, May 28.
