Bo'ness band to compete at Brass in the Park

UNISON Kinneil Band of Bo'ness will take part in Midlothian's premier annual music festival this weekend.

Suitable for music lovers of all ages, Newtongrange Silver Band's Brass in the Park, takes place at the Scottish Mining Museum on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12.

The weekend festival brings together the best brass band talent from around the country for a series of competitions culminating in a spectacular mass brass band march finale.

Unison Kinneil will join counterparts from the likes of Fife, the Borders and Perthshire, with over 40 bands expected to participate.

Given the traditional connection between brass bands and mining communities, the Scottish Mining Museum is the perfect venue for the occasion.

Rowan Brown, Scottish Mining Museum director, said: "We are delighted to welcome competitors and supporters to our fantastic facility to take part in this year's Brass in the Park.

"In decades gone by, many miners enjoyed being part of brass bands and the upcoming festival will echo this tradition.

"Our museum is an inspiring location for the event, and we wish all competitors taking part in Brass in the Park 2010 the very best of luck."

Last year Dalmellington Brass Band scooped first place in the march and hymn tune section, beating off competition from 19 other bands, with their conductor Archie Hutchison.

Julie Sanderson, from Brass in the Park, said: "Brass in the Park has become a tradition in the world of music, running annually for the last 15 years, and we are pleased to hold this year's event in the five-star Scottish Mining Museum.

"Midlothian's premier music event is truly coming home and we look forward to the upcoming festival."

Numerous food, drink and activity stalls will also be on site throughout the weekend and tickets are available for both days or can be purchased on an individual basis.
