£45 million council cuts looming
SAVINGS of around £45m may need to be made by Falkirk Council over the next three years, and cost-cutting measures put forward by the public are now being examined.
Hundreds of taxpayers suggested ways budget pressure could be eased when they responded to a major customer satisfaction survey undertaken by the local authority.
Results of the survey – carried out in March and April – were published this week and common themes for service savings included reduced energy use and opening hours, plus higher charges.
Local authority leader councillor Craig Martin told the Bo'ness Journal: "Final figures are not available but the best estimate is that the council will have to find around 45m in savings over the next three years."
It's a similar figure in neighbouring West Lothian Council, which is half way through its own major consultation exercise.
All councils are bracing themselves for cuts in the wake of the worldwide economic downturn.
For the full story, and the survey results, see this week's Journal and Gazette, on sale on Friday, August 13.
