Take a trip down memory lane in Bo'ness, Linlithgow and South Queensferry.

THIS week's Peep at the Past harks back to a gala day scene from Dalmeny in the 1950s.
The photograph features the gala day committee of the day.
They were back row, l-r: Jock Muir, Sandy Tulloch, Jock Middlemiss, Jimmy Henderson, Willie Johnstone and Willie Young.

Front row, l-r: Jimmy Watson, Jock Colquhoun, Alex Crawford, Willie Lamont (Killicrankie), Harry Livingston and ? Cameron.

The photograph was submitted by Jimmy Henderson, of Carlowrie Crescent in Dalmeny, seen in the above image, after he unearthed a drawer-full of old photographs relating to the village which date as far back as the 1930s.

50 years ago

A gift of £20 was given to the Ferry Fair Fund by Hugh Russell, Capetown who is visiting. Mr Russell's family have been in the Ferry for around 250 years and his father William Russell was provost of the burgh from 1880-1884.

Suggestions that Bo'ness should have its own burgh museum were made at a town council meeting by councillor Charles Snedden. He said the consecration stone and Celtic Cross had sparked local interest and could get the project off to a good start.

Last Saturday morning there was a crash on the Edinburgh road about 200 yards east of Gateside Farm, Linlithgow, between a bus heading east and a van travelling in the opposite direction.

Under the charge of Miss E S Murdoch, county camp adviser, West Lothian Girl Guides have been under canvas this week at The Leuchold, Dalmeny. This camp was held to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Girl Guide movement in Britain.

Jim Gray, Bo'ness United's utility forward, who was placed on the transfer list, has been re-signed by the club. He was one of the top scorers last term.


25 years ago


Linlithgow town crier John Watson went south with his voice for a town crier's competition last week. Despite failing to receive a prize, he had an enjoyable day at the St Anne's Carnival Day at New Glendower.

West Lothian District Council's limousine, considered too expensive for the convener's use, is now being used by the vice-convener. The Jaguar costs £5000 a year to run and was considered too costly for convener Dominic McCauley, but it is now being used by his deputy.

A special guide has been published by Forth Valley Tourist Board to encourage visitors to shop locally. It contains a list of tourist board members and the goods and services they offer in Forth Valley.

Heartless thieves stole a beautiful pink rose from Bo'ness Old Kirk. The theft outraged the congregation and minister Rev. William Sutherland said the rose had been a gift. It was noticed missing last week by a member of the kirk session.

Linlithgow Rose are set to sign one of the top strikers in the East Region – Robert Scott from Armadale Thistle and he is sure to prove a major boost for the Rose strike force.
