International Women’s Day event

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day is on Wednesday, March 7 aiming to inspire worldwide.

Lothian and Borders police and West Lothian Council, are hosting an information fair in the Civic Centre, Livingston, today (Wednesday) from 1-3pm, to mark the event with this year’s theme, “Connecting girls, inspiring futures”. They are targeting S5 and S6 pupils across the county, offering career information and advice.

Inspector Michaela Kerr, who is organising the event, said: “We have tried to identify the careers where women are typically under-represented in West Lothian and beyond, so that these teenagers are aware of all the opportunities open to them at this pivotal stage in their lives.

“We expect more than one hundred pupils will attend, and as a Force we’re really pleased to be able to give young women more of an insight into the work we do, and the key roles they can play in society in the future.”

Frank Anderson, executive councillor for services for the community, added: “West Lothian Council recognises the complex and longstanding challenges to progression faced by women in business and employment. We are actively engaged with partners in trying to identify and break barriers to enable both women and men to realise their full potential.

“Raising awareness of the variety of business and employment opportunities available for the next generation is one way to help us achieve this, which is why we are pleased to be hosting this unique event.”

The following organisations will be represented at the event: Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service; Voluntary Sector West Lothian; West Lothian Council; Crown Office; West Lothian Youth Congress; West Lothian College; Oatridge College; NHS/Health Improvement Scotland; Scottish Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
