Take a trip down memory lane in Bo'ness, Linlithgow and South Queensferry

50 years ago

The fiercest fire to hit Bo'ness this century began at 9.30pm last Friday and was still raging six hours later. Despite the attempts of 50 firemen, the estimated damage was 50,000.

In Queensferry, the siren of the ferry boat inadvertently caused an accident at the Hawes when Mary Cassey, a scooter passenger was startled, causing the scooter to wobble. Both riders ended up on the road and were taken to hospital for observation.

A 22-year-old from Bo'ness accidentally lit his living room fire with petrol thinking it was paraffin, causing a terrific explosion. Attempts to fight the flames meant he sustained burns to his face, hands and right leg.

100 new houses will be built in a new scheme at Grahamsdyke in news revealed at the Bo'ness town council monthly meeting.

Linlithgow Rose gladdened the hearts of their supporters with a sparkling 6-1 victory over Loanhead Mayflower, after the same team took seven off Rose without reply only a few weeks ago.

25 years ago

The best steaks in Britain are served in Linlithgow. The news is official as The Champany, Linlithgow, has been included in the latest Good Food Guide.The restaurant has made it into Britain's top 50 alongside London's Dorchester Hotel.

Bomb disposal experts raced to Linlithgow on Monday after the discovery of a mortar shell. The unexploded WW2 bomb was uncovered by Robin Millar of Williamscraig. The fuse was missing but a hard knock would have triggered an explosion, experts said.

The fight will continue to prevent the building of a controversial block of luxury flats in Queensferry. Angry locals are demanding that Edinburgh District Council stops the development which is being built on the town's picturesque foreshore and they say will destroy the view.

Bo'ness town clock should be erected in East Pier Street within the next three weeks. It is believed that another 200 is needed to cover the cost of scaffolding. So far over 2500 has been raised to complete the project.
