Take a trip down memory lane in Bo'ness, Linlithgow and South Queensferry

PEOPLE in the Braehead area of Linlithgow will remember all too clearly scenes like this one, before the culvert was fixed near the golf course.

Our thanks go to reader John McComisky, of Moray Drive, who handed in this photo he found, which he thinks date from 10 years ago, showing the water creeping ever closer to the houses.

Ever since the remedial works have been carried out he's not had a problem, but has had a few sleepless nights worrying whenever the weather is bad – just in case.

50 years ago

The Scottish education department suggested that instead of extending Linlithgow Academy buildings, a completely new building on another site should be considered.

Two fires broke out at neighbouring farms in Bo'ness costing 750 worth of damage. At Nether Kinneil Farm, a 15 ton stack of wheat straw was set ablaze and on Kinneil Estate, eight corn stacks were set on fire.

Preliminaries for Riding the Marches at Linlithgow got off to a good start when the Lochmill Deacon was installed. Bobby White of 49 Main Street, Linlithgow Bridge, was lifted by the Pipe Band and marched shoulder high three times around the Cross.

Last Thursday a group of pupils from Bo'ness Public School visited the printing works of the Linlithgowshire Journal and Gazette where they had a great time.

It was a bad week for the local teams with the Rose losing 2-1 to Tranent Juniors in the Murray Cup semi final and Bo'ness United forced to organise a replay after equalising 2-2 in the RL Rae Cup semis.

Elspeth Ralston (12) of Queensferry Primary has been chosen as this year's Ferry Fair Queen on August 10. She is very excited and parents Andrew and Leonora are thrilled.

Bo'ness housewife Janette Don saved her neighbour from a house fire after she heard screams on Friday morning. Janette (41) of Jessfield Place discovered Kay King of 7 Hillcrest trapped in the upstairs bathroom almost overcome by fumes. Janette got Kay, suffering from shock and burns, into the garden. It is thought the fire was started by an electric blanket.

Falkirk District Council is owed rent arrears of almost 1 million. They stand at a total of 944,000 and over 300,000 of this is owed by tenants who are less than 100 in debt.

Residents around Preston Road have petitioned the District Council against the takeover of part of their playpark for temporary housing in caravans of decanted tenants.

Until it is mathematically certain that the Rose cannot overtake Bonnyrigg Rose, club secretary Davie Roy insists they will maintain a 100 per cent title effort in the Laidlaw league.
