Take a trip down memory lane in Bo'ness, Linlithgow and South Queensferry

50 years ago

Linlithgow Town Council is to go ahead with the first phase of the Vennel re-development area with parking places for 50 cars and 12 buses and added toilets.

An unemployed Bo'ness miner was found walking on Linlithgow Road, Bo'ness with no shoes. Police took the 21-year-old man into custody and seached the vicinity of the Newtown Co-op. They found footprints in the garden leading to a vegetable patch, a set of scales, tins of turkey and chicken – and a pair of shoes.

The British Empire Medal in the Queen's New Year's Honours List went to Jeffrey Chalmers, custodian of Linlithgow Palace. Locals were delighted that his outstanding abilities as a guide had been recognised.

It's a big day for Bo'ness United and their fans on Saturday as they face strong-going Larkhall Thistle in the second round of the new Lanark and Lothians trophy, the Citizen Cup.

West End Park in Fauldhouse, scene of many a memorable scrap, is the venue for Linlithgow Rose on Saturday when they take on Fauldhouse United in the first round of the Brown Cup.

Moves by the government to cut 1.8 million from West Lothian District Council's rate support grant for 1985/86 have been slammed as "outrageous" by MPs Tam Dalyell and Robin Cook.

Plans for a massive 3 million shopping and leisure complex at Ferrymuir, Queens-ferry will be debated for a final time this week. Included are a giant superstore, indoor bowling arena and garden centre.

A driver sacked from Linlithgow Bus Depot has been awarded more than 2700 in compensation after an industrial tribunal ruled the 37-year-old man had been unfairly dismissed by Scottish Omnibuses on March 1 last year.

Donna Courtney from St John's Way, Bo'ness gave birth to 9lb 4oz Steven just after 3.15 am on New Year's Day - the first baby of 1985 for Falkirk and District Royal Infirmary.

Bo'ness United player/coach Lennie Reid will play in the Scottish Junior Cup third round clash with Benburb. He appeared before the disciplinary committee following a sending-off and many United fans feared he would be suspended for at least one match.
