Take a trip down memory lane

ONE of the key things to get right on Marches day is your hair and this lot made sure their's was just right.

From the Marches of 1975, this picture shows from left to right Ronald McMeechan, Joe McMeechan, Ian Cairns with his mother Mrs Cairns and Davy Campbell in the bottom left, enjoying a cheeky cigar.

The happy memory was captured just outside the Black Bitch Tavern on the High Street in Linlithgow and was kindly submitted by Ann McMeechan, wife of Ronald.

Young sailors died in a tragic accident due to atrocious weather in the Firth of Forth on Sunday. On Saturday, the sailing events at a Regatta were cancelled due to the dangerous seas and high wind.

Public house robbery was carried out late Thursday night at West Pier Tavern. thieves stole whisky, spirits, money and cigarettes to the approximate value of 100.

At last Wednesday's Kirkliston and Winchburgh District Council, it was mentioned that water filled quarryholes are a real danger to children and something should be done, following the recent drowning tragedy at Dalmeny.

Glen Avon, Linlithgow Bridge, the home of Commander N.P. Brown, manager of Avon Mill, was broken into while Mr and Mrs Brown were at the Marches. Not much was stolen but a window was broken by the intruders.

Bo'ness United goalkeeper Eric Frank has attracted the attention of Broxburn Athletic but with Bo'ness United ken to keep hold of him any hopes Broxburn had of landing him are very remote indeed.

25 years ago

Thousands lined Linlithgow's streets on Tuesday for the 1985 Riding of the Marches. This year's edition was described as wet and wonderful by everyone who enjoyed it. The heavens opened at Blackness and proceedings were delayed.

Increased leisure facilities for South Queensferry could be just around the corner as a leisure plan has been drawn up by Edinburgh District Council. Local residents have high hopes that a major leisure boost could soon be in the pipeline.

A councillor's plea for cheaper charges in Linlithgow Burgh Halls looks set to be turned down. Jimmy McGinley asked West Lothian District Council if Elizabeth Geekie's Lithgo Dance Class could get a reduction.

Following months of intricate restoration, a 280 year old ceiling painting at Hopetoun House will be officially unveiled next week.

Bo'ness athlete Carol Smellie won the Scottish Schools' 800m under-17 championships at Pitreavie. She also came third in the shot putt.
