A peep at the past

WHATEVER happened to this castle? That's the question posed by members of Queensferry History Group, who studied this wartime photograph recently.

At the start of World War 2 some Czechoslavakian refugees were housed in the naval establishment at Butlaw Camp, Port Edgar, and one of them built a small castle in the Queensferry School garden.

The castle was moved when the new Queensferry Primary School was built, but nobody knows whether it was removed for safekeeping (if so where?) or if it was demolished.

If you know the answer please get in touch with the group via www.queensferryhistorygroup.org.uk

*The Falkirk and Counties savings bank reported that the amount saved in its coffers this year was up by 262,574 to nearly seven and three quarter million pounds.

*Development of land at Torphichen for police houses has been delayed. Proper permissions have still to be obtained, and the building work could be delayed until February.

*People are being sold houses in 'slum' conditions in Bo'ness, say councillors, who want the secretary of state to act to make sure homes are renovated before sale. One councillor described the system as a 'racket' and wants the council to take possession of empty homes to do them up.

*A list of wills lodged in the courthouse Linlithgow was published. This included a Bo'ness spinster who left 10,000 and a West Lothian farmer who left more than 28,000.

*Linlithgow Rose showed a much improved performance when they took on Polkemmet Juniors, winning 3-2. Bo'ness played well in their match against Bathgate, and won the match 2-1.

*A Bo'ness pensioner accidentally threw her lifesavings out in the rubbish – and it was found and handed in by honest workers at the tip. The money, totalling over 1400, was handed over to the police by Robert Grant and returned to Mrs Agnes Rothnie, who thought she had just mislaid it.

*The Union Canal should be redeveloped for amenity and recreational use, says Tam Dalyell MP. The waterway could be used for boating, fishing and walking, experts heard.

*There's a civic 'tug-of-war' being acted out in Linlithgow over who gets to use the old Linlithgow Academy building on Blackness Road. It could end up as a school, youth centre or architect's office.

*The Bo'ness and Carriden electoral ward could be disbanded, after it turns out there are only 49 eligible voters in it.

*Bo'ness United scored a thundering four goals against Whitletts Victoria, who never managed to find the back of the net. But commentators say the game lacked any atmosphere, with Bo'ness not needing to get out of second gear. Meanwhile BU players John Inglis and David Gibb have gone to Liverpool for a trial with Everton.
